Our poor Lily...
At about 9:00 on Tuesday night, Lily had her appendix removed at Kaweah Delta Hospital. She had been complaining of pain in her side for awhile, but no one - not even the ER staff - thought it was appendicitis. Luckily, the pediatrician thought otherwise and scheduled Lily for a CT scan on Tuesday evening, and within an hour and a half, Lily was in surgery. She has been recovering well - already up and walking a little bit - and seems to be managing the pain like a champ. She's been a real trooper with all the poking she's had to endure. The surgeon says Lily had a rare type of appendicitis which makes a "band" that wraps around her appendix - much like having a rubber band around your finger. It would have burst eventually, so she's very fortunate. We're hoping that Lily will be able to come home on Friday, but it means she will miss her class trip to Scicon next week. She's not very upset about it... actually, she's looking at it as another week of vacation! She's a tough kid and always has been - this isn't her first time under the knife...she had a head injury when she was only 35 months old that ended up in a subdural hematoma and a week's stay at Children's Hospital in Fresno. Even then, we were amazed at how quickly she was up and around and back to her old self. She really doesn't complain, and she's very inquisitive about everything the nurses are doing. She's learned all the lingo and lets them know when she needs more pain medication by saying - "I'm at about a five right now, so I'll need some medicine for my incision." So grown up! We're very proud of her. Thanks to everyone who sent flowers and balloons - Lily's hospital room looks amazingly cheery!
